Modern Handmade End Table: Butterfly Table in Stone and Wood: A Collaboration Between Woodworker and Stone Carver
Here is a contemporary end table, one of a kind, and another collaborative piece I made with Vermont stone sculptor Kerry O. Furlani. The design for this table evolved in an interesting way. Kerry designed and carved the butterfly form in mottled purple and green Vermont slate. She then brought it to me and left it up to me to figure out some kind of table base. Figuring out what kind of base would work with her beautiful carving was a real challenge, and somewhat intimidating. For several weeks I did not know what to do. What kind of table legs would do justice to the butterfly form? What would accentuate her carving and not make it look static, and like it was just stuck on some random set of table legs? Eventually I came to realize that the only thing that would work with this form would be six legs instead of four, since a butterfly has six legs. I also wanted to give the butterfly table top a feeling of lightness, which actually defies the heaviness of the stone. Since Kerry’s butterfly form has a refined, organic and simplified form, I wanted the legs to echo that in some way, referencing the concept of butterfly legs in a sculptural way without being too literal. I made them in cherry, to be a warm and subtle contrast to the dark slate.
