Two of my modern, carved and painted Taffy Mirrors are featured in the cover story of the November/December 2025 issue of House Beautiful magazine! I made the two matching mirrors in 2023 for the entryway of a home in Lake Jackson, Texas. The interior designer for the project was Courtnay Tartt Elias, of Creative Tonic Design. The house is filled with wonderful layers of color and detail and great furnishings – a very fun interior.

The two large mirrors are a custom size and custom color. I made them from sustainably harvested Vermont sugar maple (the same maple that maple syrup comes from) that was grown in Starksboro, Vermont on land owned by Tom Lathrop, a 5th generation sawmill owner.

I have made many different versions of my mirrors over the years, in all different sizes, from 15″ x 12″ to as large as 44″ x 79″, and in many different custom colors. I mostly make them in cherry, maple and walnut, but have also made them in other woods by request. I have also made carved custom coat rack versions of the mirrors, and sculptural open framed mirrors. I am always happy to discuss different options for one-of-a-kind designs and customization, including custom color possibilities. Please email or call me to discuss options.

Here’s the cover and photo feature from the article:

And here’s another custom mirror I made in the spring of 2025, for a customer in Portland, Maine. This one was a little smaller, 44″ x 24″, and it was painted in a great custom aqua green color that was selected by the customer. They live in a beautiful home near the Portland waterfront that is filled with colorful art, so the mirror fits right in. I took this photo on the side of my barn before driving the mirror down to Portland for a fun delivery day.

I first designed this carved mirror concept in 1998, after several years of making carved spoons, lamps and tables with a similar carved “taffy” motif. I do all of the carving and shaping by hand. I have always had a very organic and sculptural sense of design, since the very beginning of making my furniture in 1988.

I sell some of my smaller mirrors on Etsy, but please don’t be fooled by the cheap, inferior rip-offs of my designs that are starting to appear on Etsy, some of which are made in Turkey, Eastern Europe and elsewhere. If you are interested in ordering a mirror, please contact me here.
