A Gathering of Spoons – Carved Cherry Spoon by David Hurwitz Featured in New Book
Last week I found out that one of my carved cherry spoons is featured in a new book called A Gathering of Spoons: The Design Gallery of the World’s Most Stunning Wooden Art Spoons, by Norman D. Stevens, published by Linden Publishing. The book came out this month. Norman Stevens is a collector of carved wood spoons, and over the past few years has put together a really beautiful and extensive collection of 300 spoons by makers from all over the world . For his spoon project, he asked spoon carvers to make him a 9″ long spoon with a small and shallow scoop about the size of a teaspoon. Beyond those criteria, they could do whatever they wanted. In February 2007, I made him a small cherry spoon with one of my signature twist handles for the collection. It was one of the first 100 spoons he commissioned for the project.
From the publisher’s description of the book:
“Featuring more than 200 hand-carved art spoons, this collection is the definitive photographic record of the world’s most brilliant and beautiful examples of art spoon design. …showcases the finest work in spoonmaking from around the world”
I just got a copy of the book, and was surprised to see that in addition to being featured within the book with all of the other spoons, my spoon is also featured in the beginning of the book, facing the table of contents, and also on the inside flap on the back cover, just above the author’s bio.
Here’s a photo of the book cover and the spoon I made for the collection:
