Contemporary Hall Table Featuring the Hand Carved Work of Vermont Stone Sculptor Kerry O. Furlani

Here’s a hall table I made in collaboration with Vermont based sculptor Kerry O. Furlani.  She is a master of hand carved bas relief in slate, and uses the many different varieties and colors of slate from quarries right here in Vermont.  For this piece, she carved two slabs of luscious “unfading green” slate.  I designed the overall table design with the concept of the two stone panels, and she designed the organic form of the carving.  I love how the green color works with the cherry wood of the table.  It was a fun piece to build, and it is one of six different pieces we have done together.

The table is currently in a show titled “Rock Solid” at Studio Place Arts, in Barre, Vermont.  It is an annual show of stone carving by Vermont based sculptors. Besides the table, Kerry has several other pieces in the show, including a new body of work of really beautiful pieces carved in the round, in addition to her bas relief work.  One thing I really love about Kerry’s work is she carves it all entirely with hand tools.  That process really shows her attention to detail and sensitivity to line and form.  In this day and age of over-use of power tools for carving stone, her technique really stands out.

To see more of Kerry’s work, including her hand carved lettering in stone, check out her new website. To see other collaborative pieces we have made together, please visit the collaborative work section of my website.

This table was featured in the design book 500 Tables, by Lark Books.
