New Maple-Lime Taffy Mirror
I’ve been pretty good about photographing my work, but occasionally I make and sell a piece through a gallery or show where I don’t get a chance to get a professional quality photo of the piece before it sells. This just happened with a brand new version of one of my carved, contemporary “Taffy” wall mirrors, which I made for a group show of furniture made from Vermont grown woods, at Frog Hollow Gallery, in Burlington, Vermont. The new mirror was made from FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) certified sustainably grown and harvested Vermont sugar maple (hard maple). I painted the outer portion a bright lime color.
The mirror just sold last weekend, and the only photos I have of it are from the show opening, and a shot of it lying on a furniture blanket before taking it to the gallery. I will make another one of these maple-lime mirrors soon, and get better photos of it to post on my website, but here’s the photos for now:

Maple-Lime Taffy Mirror in carved and painted FSC Vermont sugar maple, 31" high x 24" wide x 2" deep.
With this mirror, this is the first time I have made this design in maple, and the first time painting one this retro green color. For me, this piece has connections to two different places: Vermont, because of the locally grown maple I used to make it, but also Japan, because of the color of the paint. I was in Japan in 2008, and was very inspired to see this shade of bright lime green used on all kinds of things there: pedestrian bridges, signs on businesses, vending machines, food packaging, fashion, product design, interiors, etc. So while some furniture makers of Japanese inspired furniture draw inspiration from traditional Japanese forms, for me it was this vivid color from contemporary Japanese design. What I love about the Vermont maple when used in this design is the whiteness and light color of the wood works well next to vibrant colors.

A quick snapshot on a furniture baknket. The mirror frame appears a little distorted here due to the angle of the camera. The top and bottom of the frame are the same width.
