Two New Large Carved Taffy Mirrors
I have been making my carved wood, contemporary “Taffy” wall mirrors for 12 years now. Over the years I have made them in a variety of different sizes and different woods. Some have been all natural, with a Danish oil and varnish finish, while others have been partially painted.
Here are two large mirrors that I completed in 2010 and 2011. The Large Cherry Taffy Mirror is based on the smaller version of this design. The small version is 15″ high x 12″ wide x 2″ deep, and this larger one is twice the size, 31″ high x 24″ wide x 3″ deep. I decided to use thicker cherry on this one, to give the carving an even more dramatic effect.
The other mirror is a Large Walnut Taffy Mirror. This one is 23″ high x 38″ wide x 2″ deep, and can be hung horizontally or vertically.
Also included below is one of my painted Taffy Mirrors, in cherry. The first painted one I made was exhibited at the Wharton Esherick Museum in 2003. It received two different awards in that show. The second one I made was in a traveling show called “Curv-iture”, which toured the US for 2 years in 2004 and 2005. It was featured on the introductory page of the show catalog (see below). I have since made several more painted versions, some in larger sizes and some in custom colors.
