2013 December 31
by David

Here’s the third custom wall mirror from a grouping of four handmade mirrors in bright retro colors that I completed and sold recently.  This one is carved Vermont sugar maple with lime green paint.  The maple I used for this mirror is FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) certified sustainably harvested.  I can make these contemporary mirrors in custom sizes and custom colors, and in other woods by request.

I will post the fourth mirror from the grouping in the next blog post, so stay tuned…

Happy New Year!!!

Turquoise Taffy Mirror – A Carved Wood, Contemporary Wall Mirror

2013 December 14
by David

Here’s the second custom wall mirror from a grouping of four handmade mirrors in bright retro colors that I completed and sold recently.  This one is carved Vermont sugar maple with turquoise paint.  The maple I used for this mirror is FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) certified sustainably harvested.  I can make these contemporary mirrors in custom sizes and custom colors.  This one is an homage to late 1950’s design.  1958.  It reminds me of my grandparent’s turquoise kitchen table and chairs and modern ceiling lamp, which they bought back then.

I will post the other mirrors from the group of four in the next few blog posts, so stay tuned…

Console Table, Custom and Contemporary, in Carved Cherry with Curly Maple Top

2013 November 22
by David

Here is a new console table in carved cherry with a curly maple top.  I sold this one of a kind table in September at the annual Vermont Fine Furniture and Woodworking Festival in Woodstock, Vermont.  It now resides in a home in Hanover, New Hampshire.  The table also won a Second Place Award (for custom studio furniture) in the annual Vermont Fine Furniture and Wood Products Design Competition, held at the festival.  The curly maple is Vermont sugar maple (hard maple), and the cherry is FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) certified sustainably harvested.

I  built this console table earlier this year for a gallery exhibit at the Helen Day Art Center, in Stowe, Vermont.  But I had originally designed it back in 1999, when I built a smaller entryway table that had a similar base, but only a single carved column.  In the designs for that piece, I had sketches for several variations, including this one, with the two symmetrical carved forms.  Last winter I came across this design in some of my old sketch books, and decided it was time to build it.

The cherry has a Danish oil finish, to bring out the depth and warmth of the cherry wood.  The curly maple has a clear poly varnish finish, to keep the maple as white as possible, and also to make the curly figure really pop out and have more visual depth.  Building up multiple coats of clear varnish on figured wood helps to accentuate an effect called chatoyance, which makes the undulating grain of curly maple look like 3-dimensional ruffled satin.  It is an effect that I love to incorporate into my work through the use of figured maple, and the best part is some of the very best figured maple grows right here in Vermont!  Curly maple is Vermont’s own native and sustainable exotic wood.

I am in constant awe of the sugar maple tree, for its beautiful foliage color in autumn, it’s excellent warmth as a heat source for my home in winter, it’s sweet delicacy of maple syrup, and it’s amazing grain, working proporties and durability for furniture.

And since some people ask, I do all of my carving by hand, with a combination of hand tools and hand-held power tools.  I do not use a CNC (computer-numeric-controlled) robotic router to do my work.  Also, I do all of my drawings and design work by hand, with a pencil and paper.  I’m an old-school designer.  There’s something about the free movement and flow of the hand and the arm that I like when drawing curves large and full scale.  I also like being able to step back and see a design full scale on paper; it’s easier to get a sense of a design and it’s proportions that way, vs. viewing a tiny version of it on a computer screen.  I know in this day and age of computer aided design (and computer aided everything) that is a now radical notion.  Pencil, paper and drafting tools = analog designer.  Maybe drawing the old fashioned way will make a comeback someday, like vinyl records and tube-amp sound systems.

Walnut-Lime Taffy Mirror – A Custom Wall Mirror

2013 September 10
by David

I just completed four new wall mirrors in bright retro colors.  This one is carved walnut with lime-chartreuse green.  The walnut I used for this mirror had unusual streaks of lighter and darker grain, which worked really well with the carved form, and added another visual dimension to the design.  I can make these contemporary mirrors in custom sizes and custom colors, and in other woods by request.

I will post the other mirrors from the group of four in the next few blog posts, so stay tuned…

Coatrack With Mirror – a handmade custom design

2013 September 3
by David

Here’s a new one-of-a-kind wall mounted coatrack with mirror in carved and painted cherry, which I completed and shipped a couple weeks ago to a customer in Kansas. I designed this piece to fit a 32″ wide wall space.  The cherry is FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) certified sustainably harvested.  The mirror glass is 1/4″ thick with a polished edge, and is offset from the wall by 3/4″, to create a shadow effect on the wall.  Since this was a custom design, I did sketches of a series of different design ideas, based on a previous sculptural wall hung coat rack I made, but for this one I added a mirror into the mix, on the customer’s request.  After reviewing my ideas, she then selected this design.

Sugar Maple Taffy Table – a contemporary end table in carved Vermont maple

2013 July 30
by David

Here is a contemporary end table I designed and made in carved Vermont sugar maple with a birdseye maple top.  I have made several different versions of this design over the years, including ones in other types of woods, like cherry with birdseye maple, maple with butternut, and walnut with curly sassafras.  Last month I completed one of these end tables in this maple and birdseye combination for an annual summer group exhibit called “Rejuvination”, at the Furchgott Sourdiffe Gallery, in Shelburne, Vermont.  The show runs through August 13th.  It’s a great gallery, run by cool people, in a great, old, restored Victorian house, featuring mostly fine art (painting and sculpture) by Vermont artists, and some fine crafts.  The quality and creativity of the work shown there is outstanding, so it’s an honor to have my work shown with the work of these fellow artists.

The sugar maple (hard maple) used to make the legs and aprons on this end table is FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) certified sustainably harvested maple, grown in Vermont.  The birdseye sugar maple used to make the table top was also grown in Vermont, in Addison County.

I can also make this table in custom sizes and other woods by request, including hall table and console table versions.  To see examples, please visit the End Tables page, and the Console and Hall Tables page on my website.

One of my Sugar Maple Taffy Tables was featured in the September/October 2011 issue of Design New England magazine.

In addition to this maple end table, I also have another end table in the gallery show, a Butterfly Table, a collaborative piece I made with Vermont sculptor Kerry O. Furlani.  That table features carved cherry legs and a top in hand carved Vermont slate.  It can be seen here, at this previous blog post.

Ash and Cherry Console Table

2013 June 24
by David

Here’s a one of a kind console table I designed and made.  This table has a curly cherry table top, ash legs and drawer fronts, cherry dovetailed drawers, and natural stone drawer pulls.  I  shaped each leg by hand with a spokeshave.  The drawers are mounted on side-hung, waxed maple drawer slides, in the Danish tradition.  Each drawer has a small wood stop at the back, to prevent it from being accidentally pulled entirely out of the table.

The table top has a hand rubbed Danish oil finish, to bring out the color, warmth and depth of the figured cherry.  The legs and drawer fronts have a hand rubbed poly-varnish finish, to keep the ash as light in tone as possible.  The drawer interiors are finished with white shellac.

It is 35″ high x 49″ wide x 16″ deep.  This table is currently available.

Special offer on this piece through the end of 2013:  Mention this blog post and receive free delivery anywhere in New England or New York State.  Nationwide and international delivery also available.  Please contact me for more info.

Poodle Table – a transitional hall table with hand carved and painted texture

2013 May 29
by David

A unique and funky, yet “transitional” console table, the Poodle Table features legs and aprons with a hand carved and painted texture in pine, and a hard maple table top with a hand rubbed poly-varnish finish.  The table top on this table is a single massive board of hard maple (16″ wide) from the Adirondack mountains of northern New York state.

What does “transitional” mean?  In the interior design world, it is commonly used to refer to furniture pieces that can go well with either more traditional pieces, or contemporary pieces in a room.  This console table (it could also be used as a hall table) has historic and traditional references in the forms of the legs, but with an added and more contemporary flare in the carved and painted surface texture, making it a transitional piece.

I can also make custom versions of this design, for kitchen tables, kitchen islands, dining tables, side boards, serving buffets and end tables.  Please contact me for more information.

Custom End Table: A New 22″ High Elroy End Table

2013 May 13
by David

Last month I shipped a custom version of my contemporary Elroy End Table design to a customer in New York City.  This one was 22″ high, 5″ shorter than the original version.  I like it at this height.  It works well with couches and living room chairs that are lower and have lower arm rests.  I built this end table in black walnut with a 3/8″ thick x 15″ diameter glass top with a polished edge.  I can also make this end table in other woods, like cherry, maple, ash, white oak, or other woods by request.

Modern Handmade End Table: Butterfly Table in Stone and Wood: A Collaboration Between Woodworker and Stone Carver

2013 March 24
by David

Here is a contemporary end table, one of a kind, and another collaborative piece I made with Vermont stone sculptor Kerry O. Furlani.  The design for this table evolved in an interesting way.  Kerry designed and carved the butterfly form in mottled purple and green Vermont slate.  She then brought it to me and left it up to me to figure out some kind of table base.  Figuring out what kind of base would work with her beautiful carving was a real challenge, and somewhat intimidating.  For several weeks I did not know what to do.  What kind of table legs would do justice to the butterfly form?  What would accentuate her carving and not make it look static, and like it was just stuck on some random set of table legs?  Eventually I came to realize that the only thing that would work with this form would be six legs instead of four, since a butterfly has six legs.  I also wanted to give the butterfly table top a feeling of lightness, which actually defies the heaviness of the stone.  Since Kerry’s butterfly form has a refined, organic and simplified form, I wanted the legs to echo that in some way, referencing the concept of butterfly legs in a sculptural way without being too literal.  I made them in cherry, to be a warm and subtle contrast to the dark slate.
