Elroy End Table – a contemporary end table design
I designed and made the first Elroy End Table in 2005, and continue to make them today. The criteria I gave myself for this design was to come up with a relatively simple design that didn’t have any carving in it (like most of my other designs), but yet still had certain sculptural qualities, and an overall sculptural feel. In approaching the design from a sculptural aspect, I worked with the interaction of two intersecting planes to create the base, and how those two planes could in themselves have interesting shapes involving curves (gotta have curves – that’s always been my aesthetic – it’s just how I think). In that intersection, the circular cutouts define a central negative space just beneath the table top that also relates visually to the circular top. One thing I like about using glass table tops in contemporary furniture deisgn is working with how the design of the base looks when viewed through the top, and how certain sculptural qualities of the base can stand out more than if they were hidden under a wood top. Here’s another example of that, in a dining table I made with a glass top.
I made that first Elroy End Table in walnut, and have been making them since then in walnut or cherry. I also made one in red oak dyed dark red. I can make this design in custom versions, including other woods by request, painted versions to a color of your choice, and black dyed (“ebonized”) ash.
Here are photos of it in different woods:
