David Hurwitz Originals

David Hurwitz of David Hurwitz Originals in Randolph, Vermont, USA is a furniture
designer and craftsman of custom, unique, handmade wood furniture, mirrors, lamps,
accessories and cooking utensils (carved wood spoons and spatulas) that are
sculptural, organic, funky and contemporary. Some signature one of a kind, art furniture
pieces made by David Hurwitz include his carved Taffy Mirrors, carved cherry wine
cabinet, walnut and ash writing desk, and Sugar Maple Taffy Table. Although David
Hurwitzʼs work is contemporary, his designs are sometimes influenced by shaker, art
and craft, art nouveau and art deco styles, as well as the sculpture and designs of
Isamu Noguchi, Alexander Calder, Wharton Esherick, Carlo Mollino and Dr. Seuss.
David Hurwitz also builds hall tables, sofa tables, end tables, coffee tables, console
tables, side tables, occasional tables, custom cabinets, bathroom vanities (with
handmade ceramic sinks by Vermont Art Sinks), chest of drawers, blanket chests,
dining tables, kitchen tables, desks, armoires, large wall mirrors, mirrors on stands, wall
cabinets, display shelves, bookcases, corner cabinets, coat racks, clocks, benches, and
beds. Some of his designs have natural finishes, while others are hand painted in
custom colors. He also designs and builds collaborative pieces with stone sculptor
Kerry O. Furlani, combining carved Vermont slate with wood in contemporary furniture
designs.

David Hurwitz is a member of the Guild of Vermont Furniture Makers, the Furniture
Society, the Vermont Wood Manufacturers Association, the Vermont Crafts Council and
Frog Hollow Vermont State Craft Center. He has shown his contemporary carved wood
art furniture at the ICFF - International Contemporary Furniture Fair, the Providence
Fine Furnishings Show, and the Crafts at the Cathedral Show (at the Cathedral of St.
John the Divine in NYC). His work has been featured in Fine Woodworking magazine,
Ocean Home magazine, Woodwork magazine, 500 Tables by Lark Books, Vermont
Home Style magazine, and many other national and regional publications.

David Hurwitzʼs furniture designs have won awards at the Wharton Esherick Museumʼs
annual show in 2003, as well as 5 different awards at the annual Vermont Fine Furniture
and Wood Products Design Competition in 2006, 2007 and 2008. In 2007, he also won
the Best In Show award at the Vermont Fine Furniture and Woodworking Festival in
Woodstock, Vermont.

David Hurwitz specializes in custom commissioned pieces built to order, and also
makes limited edition pieces that are available through his website as well as through
galleries and craft shows. He can build pieces to meet LEED green building
requirements, including FSC certified wood and local hardwoods available from
Exclusively Vermont Hardwoods in Bristol, Vermont. David was trained in Woodworking
and Furniture Design at the School for American Craftsmen at Rochester Institute of
Technology, in Rochester, New York.
